A State Growing Older

 UNDERSTANDING THE NH AGING POPULATION:

New Hampshire's older population is growing. Currently 26.7% of the state is now 60 or older (368,151) with 19% of the population aged 65 or older (261, 749). The age structure is changing as the population is shifting as baby boomer generations enter later life [1].  Almost 61% are between the ages of 65-75 with the remaining aged 75 and older. 18% of the 65+ population are veterans and 26% of NH older adults live alone.

Rural residents are more likely to be older (38%), never married and live alone. Many receive food benefits with an income below the poverty line. Rural older adults have the highest rates of poor mental health and overall health compared to urban and suburban areas of the state [1].

From 2016-2021 Medicare managed care enrollment increased from 8% to 27%. More than 25% of the 65+ population is now in a Medicare managed care plan [1]. Rate increases were seen for arthritis, depression, heart attack, rates of inpatient hospital and readmissions.

Women have higher rates than men for osteoporosis, mental health, chronic pain and fatigue while men have higher rates of cardiovascular health, hypertension, vascular disease (stroke) diabetes and harmful health behaviors. Both men and women are susceptible to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

According to the NH Healthy Aging Data Report NH should implement programs to address lifestyle behaviors among older adults that include:

MEN WOMEN RURAL
  • Smoking cessation
  • Muscle strengthening /Bone Health
  • Diabetes

  • Nutrition
  • Fall prevention
  • Congestive Heart Failure

  • Physical activity
  • Mental Health
  • Heart Attack

  • Mindfulness

  • Stroke

Prolonged Social Isolation and Loneliness are Equivalent to Smoking 15 Cigarettes a Day

Before the pandemic, one in four people older than age 65 experienced social isolation, putting them at a greater risk of loneliness, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. These feelings of loneliness were exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The exact number of seniors who feel lonely is difficult to pinpoint, but a University of Michigan poll found 56% of adults ages 50 to 80 reported feelings of isolation in June 2020. Though the survey included respondents below the senior age range, it demonstrates a stark contrast to reported feelings of loneliness in 2018, when 27% of respondents reported feelings of isolation.
